A lever can look identical in a product photo but work very differently once it reaches your door. That is why understanding what is door handing matters before you order certain levers, mortise locks, handlesets, hinges, and commercial door hardware. Handing identifies the direction a door swings and the side where its hinges are located, helping you select hardware that operates correctly and presents properly when installed.

For many standard residential knob and lever sets, handing is not a concern because the latch can be reversed or the lever is universal. But when a product is specifically marked left-hand, right-hand, reversible, or non-handed, that distinction is part of the fit. A few moments spent confirming the swing can prevent an expensive return, installation delay, or a lever that points the wrong way.

What Is Door Handing?

Door handing is the convention used to describe a door's hinge side and swing direction. The basic labels are left-hand (LH) and right-hand (RH). In commercial applications, you may also see left-hand reverse (LHR) and right-hand reverse (RHR). Those additional terms account for whether the door opens toward you or away from you from the reference side.

The reference side is usually the exterior, or the side from which you enter a room, building, or secure opening. On a front entry door, this is generally the outside of the home. On an office suite door, it may be the corridor side. This point matters because a door viewed from opposite sides appears to have its hinges reversed.

Door handing is not the same as the lock function. A privacy lever, passage lever, keyed entry lever, and dummy trim can all be left- or right-handed depending on their design. The function tells you what the hardware does. The handing tells you whether its shape, mechanism, and mounting orientation fit the opening.

How to Determine Door Handing Before You Order

The most reliable way to identify handing is to stand on the door's exterior or reference side and look at the hinges. If the hinges are on the left, it is typically a left-hand door. If the hinges are on the right, it is typically a right-hand door.

This straightforward method works for many residential openings, but it does not tell the whole story for every commercial product. A commercial hardware schedule may also require you to identify whether the door opens into or out of the space. When the swing direction is relevant, terms such as LHR and RHR are used.

Use the exterior side as your starting point

Start from the side designated as the exterior by the building plan, hardware schedule, or practical use of the opening. For a single-family entry, that is usually obvious. For interior doors, use the side from which the opening is normally approached, such as the hallway side of a bedroom door or public corridor side of a restroom door.

Then note two things: hinge location and door movement. Do not rely on standing inside the room unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so. Product diagrams may use a different viewpoint than the one you assume.

Confirm the product's own handing chart

Manufacturers do not always label handing in precisely the same way. Some residential brands show a left- and right-hand diagram based on the exterior view. Others use an illustration that identifies the hinge side from the push side, pull side, or secure side of the opening.

Always compare your door to the diagram supplied with the exact product you are considering. This is especially important with mortise lock trim, curved or tapered levers, sectional handlesets, multipoint lock trim, and panic hardware. The chart provided for that item takes priority over a general rule of thumb.

Check whether the hardware is universal

Many tubular locksets and deadbolts are designed for both left- and right-hand doors. A universal product may have a reversible latch, a removable lever, or internal components that can be reconfigured during installation. If a listing says reversible or non-handed, you generally do not need to select a handing option.

That said, universal does not mean every component is interchangeable. An exterior handleset may include a universal latch but a shaped inside lever that is handed. Read the full configuration details rather than assuming that a standard bore hole lockset is automatically compatible.

Left-Hand, Right-Hand, and Reverse Handing Terms

The terms below are common in commercial door hardware and on more technical residential products:

  • LH, or left hand: From the reference side, the hinges are on the left. The door typically swings away from you.
  • RH, or right hand: From the reference side, the hinges are on the right. The door typically swings away from you.
  • LHR, or left hand reverse: From the reference side, the hinges are on the left and the door swings toward you.
  • RHR, or right hand reverse: From the reference side, the hinges are on the right and the door swings toward you.
The word “reverse” does not mean the door is installed backward. It simply identifies the opposite swing direction from standard LH or RH terminology. This distinction is often essential for exit devices, door closers, electrified locks, commercial levers, mortise locks, and strike-related components.

A door can also be described as inswing or outswing. That describes whether it opens into or out of a space, but it is not a complete handing designation by itself. You still need the hinge side to specify hardware correctly.

When Door Handing Matters Most

Handing matters whenever the hardware has an asymmetric shape or a mechanism that is built for one orientation. Curved levers are a common example. A lever may need to sweep toward the door edge, not toward the hinges, to provide proper clearance and a balanced appearance.

Mortise locks are another high-stakes example. Their latch bolts, auxiliary bolts, trim, and cylinder placement can be handed or require specific field adjustment. Ordering the wrong version may mean the lock will not latch, the bevel faces the wrong direction, or the trim cannot be mounted as intended.

Commercial openings demand even more precision. Door closers, exit devices, surface vertical rod systems, concealed hardware, access-control components, and fire-rated opening assemblies may require the exact handing and swing designation. For these products, handing affects more than appearance. It can affect operation, egress, code compliance, and the ability to complete the installation.

Hinges are also handed in some applications, particularly specialty, heavy-duty, spring, or electrified hinges. Standard butt hinges are often non-handed, but you should not assume that all hinges can be used on either side of a door.

Common Door Handing Ordering Mistakes

The most common mistake is identifying the hinge side while standing on the wrong side of the door. The second is treating a hardware photo as proof that a lever will work on either swing. Catalog images often show one orientation only, even when other options are available.

Another issue is confusing handing with door thickness, backset, or bore hole preparation. All of these details are separate. A correctly handed lockset can still be incompatible if the door has a nonstandard thickness, a 2-3/8-inch backset instead of a 2-3/4-inch backset, or an existing mortise pocket rather than standard cross-bore prep.

Before ordering a handed product, verify the manufacturer and item number, the reference side used by its handing chart, the hinge side, swing direction, door thickness, lock preparation, and required function. For a pair of doors, also determine which leaf is active and whether an astragal, coordinator, flush bolts, or exit device changes the hardware requirements.

A quick photo from the reference side can be useful when comparing your opening to a diagram or asking for purchase support. Include the hinges, the direction the door opens, existing bore holes or mortise prep, and the edge of the door if possible. Those details make it much easier to confirm the right configuration.

Choosing Hardware With Confidence

If you are replacing a standard interior lever, a universal or reversible option may simplify the project.
