How to Measure Door Thickness for Hardware Fit
A new handleset can look perfect in a finish sample and still fail at the door because the lock was built for a thinner slab. Before choosing a lockset, deadbolt, lever, hinge, or commercial device, knowing how to measure door thickness gives you one of the most important fitment details. It takes less than a minute, but it can prevent an incorrect order, installation delays, and costly returns.
What door thickness means for hardware
Door thickness is the distance from one broad face of the door to the other. It is not the width of the door opening, the door's edge width, or the thickness of trim. For hardware selection, this measurement tells you whether a lock, latch, spindle, mounting screw, cylinder, hinge, or exit device will properly reach through and secure to the door.
Many residential locksets are designed for doors between 1-3/8 inches and 1-3/4 inches thick. That range covers a large share of standard interior and exterior doors, but it is not universal. Solid wood entry doors, custom doors, fire-rated doors, insulated metal doors, commercial doors, and doors with applied panels can fall outside it.
A difference of 1/4 inch can matter. A lock may have a spindle that is too short, a deadbolt tailpiece that cannot engage, or mounting screws that do not reach. Some manufacturers offer thick-door kits, while others make certain products only for a specific range. Measure before selecting the hardware, not after it arrives.
How to measure door thickness accurately
Open the door so you can access its latch edge. This is the narrow vertical edge where the latch or bolt extends into the strike plate. A tape measure is usually enough, although a ruler or digital caliper can be useful for detailed commercial hardware work.
Place the tape measure across the door's edge, from one flat face to the opposite flat face. Keep the tape square to the edge so you are measuring straight through the door, not on a diagonal. Record the measurement in inches, including fractions such as 1-3/8, 1-3/4, or 2-1/4 inches.
Do not measure over weatherstripping, door sweeps, decorative molding, or an edge guard. Those accessories may affect clearances, but they are not the door thickness used to size most hardware. If the edge is covered by a latch faceplate, measure above or below it where the door material is exposed.
For the clearest result, measure in two or three places along the latch edge. Most manufactured doors are consistent, but older wood doors can be slightly uneven from wear, refinishing, moisture movement, or previous repairs. If the readings vary, use the thickest measurement when checking the manufacturer's stated door-thickness range.
Measuring a door that is already hung
You do not need to remove the door. Open it at least 90 degrees, then measure the exposed latch edge. If the door cannot open wide enough because of a wall, sidelights, or furniture, use a small ruler against the edge or a caliper at the top or bottom of the slab.
Avoid measuring at the hinge side when possible. A door can have hinge mortises, shims, security studs, or paint buildup there that makes it harder to get a clean reading. The latch edge is generally the most useful and accessible location.
Measuring a slab before installation
For an uninstalled door slab, set it on edge securely or lay it flat on padded supports. Measure the raw slab itself, not the packaging or temporary protective material. If it will receive thick veneer, decorative cladding, or a metal skin after measurement, account for the finished thickness rather than the unfinished core.
This is especially relevant for custom entry doors. A slab may begin at 1-3/4 inches, then gain material through applied moldings or panel construction. The lock body still needs to pass through the portion of the door where the bore hole is located, so measure at that exact height.
Common door thicknesses in US applications
A 1-3/8-inch door is common for interior residential passage doors, closet doors, and some light-duty exterior doors. A 1-3/4-inch door is widely used for residential exterior doors, many premium entry doors, and commercial hollow metal or wood doors.
Thicker doors are common in custom residential work and commercial settings. A 2-inch, 2-1/4-inch, or 2-1/2-inch door may require a thick-door kit, longer screws, a longer cylinder, or a hardware model specifically engineered for that thickness. Do not assume a standard residential lock will adapt simply because the bore hole diameter is standard.
Thin doors need attention as well. Some cabinet-style, utility, storm, and specialty doors may be thinner than 1-3/8 inches. Standard tubular locks can be too deep or may not clamp securely. Specialty hardware is often the correct answer instead of trying to modify a standard lockset.
Check more than thickness before ordering
Door thickness is essential, but it is only one part of a correct hardware specification. Once you have the measurement, verify the other dimensions that affect fit and function:
- Backset: Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore hole. Common residential backsets are 2-3/8 inches and 2-3/4 inches.
- Bore hole size: Standard cylindrical lock preparation is often a 2-1/8-inch cross bore, but mortise and specialty hardware use different preparations.
- Edge bore size: The latch hole in the door edge must accept the latch or bolt supplied with the hardware.
- Door handing and swing: Lever direction, active trim, and some mortise or commercial products depend on whether the door is left- or right-hand and whether it swings in or out.
- Door construction and rating: Fire-rated, metal, glass-core, acoustic, and narrow-stile doors may have restrictions on drilling or hardware choices.
When a thick-door kit is needed
A thick-door kit is an accessory package that adapts compatible hardware for doors beyond the product's standard thickness range. Depending on the brand and product type, it may include longer mounting screws, an extended spindle, a longer tailpiece, an extended cylinder collar, or other internal components.
Thick-door kits are not interchangeable across brands, and they are not always available for every collection or function. A kit designed for a tubular lever may not work with a deadbolt, handleset, electronic lock, or mortise lock from the same manufacturer. Confirm compatibility with the exact product model, function, and door thickness.
There is also a practical limit. If a door is substantially thicker than the product's approved range, an add-on kit may not be enough. The trim may sit incorrectly, the latch may not operate smoothly, or the lock may not meet the intended security and performance standard. In that case, select hardware made for thick doors rather than forcing a standard product to fit.
Special cases that need closer attention
Prehung exterior doors can be deceptive because weatherstripping, thresholds, and brick molding draw attention away from the slab. Measure only the door itself at the latch edge. The thickness of the frame does not determine lock compatibility.
For doors with decorative paneling, measure where the lock and deadbolt will be installed. Raised panels can make the door appear thicker than it is at the center rail. Hardware needs a flat, stable mounting surface, and many products specify the minimum flat area required around the bore holes.
Commercial openings deserve an additional layer of caution. Exit devices, closers, panic trim, electrified locks, and mortise locks often have precise door-thickness limits that relate to fire labels, latch engagement, mounting reinforcement, and code requirements. Measure the door and review the opening's existing prep before selecting replacement hardware.
If you are working with a fire-rated door, do not enlarge holes or modify the door without confirming what the label and applicable requirements permit. A hardware change that seems minor can affect the opening's rating or compliance.
A quick fitment check before you buy
Write down the door thickness, backset, bore hole size, edge bore size, and handing before comparing hardware. Then review the product's stated door-thickness range rather than relying on a general category description. If your door falls at the edge of a listed range, verify whether the product includes the necessary parts or requires a separate kit.
For a full-home hardware project, measure every door type. Interior bedroom doors, exterior entry doors, French doors, pantry doors, and garage entry doors may not share the same thickness or preparation. Treating them as one group is a common source of ordering errors.
A precise measurement is a small step, but it makes the rest of the specification process much easier. If your door is outside the standard range or the product details are unclear, get fitment guidance before ordering. The right hardware should feel intentional at installation, not improvised at the door.
