Guide to Door Lock Functions for Every Door
A lever can look identical on two doors and operate very differently. One may open freely from either side, while the other may require a key, release from the outside in an emergency, or stay locked whenever the door closes. Selecting hardware by finish alone is a common source of ordering mistakes. This guide to door lock functions explains what each function does, where it belongs, and what to confirm before you buy.
Start With Function, Not Style
A door lock function describes how a lockset latches, locks, and releases from each side of the door. It is separate from the hardware’s style, finish, brand, or even basic lock type. A keyed lever, for example, may be specified as an entry function, a storeroom function, or an office function. Each uses a key differently.
The correct choice depends on what the room needs to do. A bedroom needs personal privacy with emergency access. A supply closet may need to remain secured unless an authorized person has a key. A front door needs dependable exterior security, often with a separate deadbolt. For commercial openings, the function must also support safe egress and the building’s applicable code requirements.
Before choosing a function, consider who uses the door, whether the door needs to latch, who needs access from each side, and what should happen when the door closes. Those answers narrow the field quickly.
Common Residential Door Lock Functions
Passage Function
Passage knobs and levers latch the door but do not lock. Turning either handle retracts the latch from either side. This function is commonly used for hallways, closets, laundry rooms, and other interior doors where a closed door is useful but privacy or security is not.
Passage hardware is also a practical choice for bedrooms when a separate lock is not wanted. Do not confuse a passage set with a dummy trim. Passage hardware has a working latch and requires a standard bore hole and door-edge preparation.
Privacy Function
Privacy sets are designed for bedrooms and bathrooms. They lock from the inside with a push button, turn button, or small thumbturn. From the outside, there is usually an emergency release that can be operated with a privacy key, pin, or small flat tool, depending on the design.
A privacy lock is not intended to secure a room against forced entry. Its purpose is to signal occupancy and prevent casual access. For a home office containing sensitive documents or a room that needs true controlled access, a keyed function may be a better fit.
Dummy Function
Dummy knobs, levers, and trim are non-working pieces mounted to the face of a door. They do not have a latch, lock, or moving mechanism. They are used on fixed doors, decorative double-door panels, and doors that operate with a ball catch, roller catch, magnetic catch, or separate latch system.
Dummy hardware is often sold as single or double dummy. A single dummy includes one trim piece for one face of a door. A double dummy includes trim for both sides. This distinction matters when ordering hardware for French doors, pantry doors, or inactive door panels.
Keyed Entry Function
Keyed entry locksets lock and unlock with a key from the exterior and typically use a thumbturn or push button on the interior. They are common on side entries, garage entry doors, exterior utility doors, and some home offices.
For a primary exterior door, a keyed entry lever or knob is often paired with a separate single-cylinder deadbolt. The lockset provides convenient latching, while the deadbolt provides the primary security bolt. A handleset with interior trim can serve the same purpose, but the deadbolt and lower grip are usually separate components.
Consider whether you want the entry set to automatically lock after the door closes or remain unlocked until someone turns the interior button. Product designs vary. If automatic locking would create an inconvenience for your household, confirm the operating details before specifying the function.
Deadbolt Functions and Exterior Security
A deadbolt does not replace a latchset, and a latchset does not necessarily replace a deadbolt. Most exterior swinging doors need both: a spring latch for everyday operation and a deadbolt for added resistance when the door is secured.
A single-cylinder deadbolt uses a key outside and a thumbturn inside. This is the most common residential configuration. A double-cylinder deadbolt requires a key on both sides. It can be useful when glass near the lock could allow someone to reach an interior thumbturn, but it also introduces an egress concern. Occupants must have immediate access to the key to exit in an emergency, and local code or project requirements may restrict its use.
Electronic deadbolts and smart locks may use a keypad, app, credential, fingerprint reader, or mechanical key override. Their access methods differ, but their physical fit still matters. Confirm the door thickness, backset, bore-hole diameter, cross-bore location, handing requirements, and whether the device is compatible with your door’s existing preparation.
Commercial Lock Functions Need More Precision
Commercial functions are generally more specific because the lock must support staff access, key control, occupancy patterns, and life-safety expectations. A similar-looking cylindrical lever can behave very differently based on its ANSI function designation.
Storeroom Function
A storeroom lock is normally locked on the outside. The outside lever does not retract the latch unless a key is used. The inside lever always retracts the latch for free exit. Once the key is removed, the exterior returns to its locked condition.
This function suits supply rooms, maintenance closets, stock rooms, and other areas where access should be limited at all times. It is not the same as a standard entry function, which may allow the exterior to remain unlocked.
Classroom Function
A classroom lock allows the outside lever to be locked or unlocked with a key. The inside lever always permits exit and usually does not control the exterior lock state. It is often specified for classrooms, offices, and other rooms that need the ability to secure the exterior without restricting people inside.
The exact operating sequence can vary by manufacturer and product series. For a school, healthcare, or office project, verify the specific function chart rather than relying on a broad function name alone.
Office Function
Office locks are typically key-operated from the outside and have an interior push button or thumbturn that can lock the exterior lever. The interior lever remains free for exit. This function can work well for private offices, consultation rooms, and certain administrative spaces.
An office function is convenient, but it is not automatically the right choice for every room called an office. If the room must always stay secured when unoccupied, a storeroom function may be more appropriate. If staff need scheduled credential access, an electronic lock or access control solution may be a better long-term fit.
Communicating and Apartment Functions
Communicating locks are used between adjoining rooms where controlled passage is needed from both sides. Apartment functions are designed for dwelling-unit entry doors and commonly provide a deadlocking latch, key access from the exterior, and an interior thumbturn or button control. These functions are more specialized, so matching the manufacturer’s function chart and the opening’s intended use is essential.
Verify the Door Preparation Before Ordering
Even the correct function will not solve a fit problem. Measure the door thickness and backset first. Residential hardware commonly fits a 1-3/8-inch or 1-3/4-inch door, while thicker doors may require an extension kit, longer spindle, or specialty configuration. Backset is typically 2-3/8 inches or 2-3/4 inches, measured from the door edge to the center of the bore hole.
Also check the bore-hole diameter, the distance between a deadbolt bore and latchset bore, edge-bore size, door handing, and whether the door is prepped for a standard cylindrical lock, mortise lock, or multipoint system. Handlesets and electronic locks can have additional clearance requirements around glass, trim, screen doors, and storm doors.
For a replacement project, photograph both sides of the opening and the door edge before removing existing hardware. That simple step makes it easier to verify latch location, strike shape, mounting holes, and any concealed preparation.
Choose Keying With the Whole Property in Mind
Keyed hardware should be planned as a system, not purchased one door at a time. Homeowners may want all exterior doors keyed alike while keeping interior keyed doors separate. Property managers may need master-keyed cylinders, restricted keyways, or a consistent replacement strategy across multiple units.
Not every lock can be keyed alike with every other lock. Keyway compatibility, cylinder format, brand, and product construction all affect what is possible. If matching keys matters, establish the keying plan before placing the order rather than assuming locks can be changed later.
The right function should feel ordinary once it is installed: residents can enter without confusion, visitors can exit without instruction, and the door does exactly what the space requires. When the opening is unusual, the door is thicker than standard, or the function chart leaves questions, take the extra moment to confirm the specification. That is usually the difference between hardware that merely looks right and hardware that is right for the door.
