Think through traffic in both directions. Does the door need to latch closed? Does someone need to secure it from the inside? Should a keyholder be able to enter while the room is occupied? And, most critically for commercial openings, can anyone exit freely in an emergency? Those answers narrow the choices quickly.

Passage Function: Latching Without Locking

Passage knobs and levers turn freely from both sides and retract the latch. They are the standard choice for doors that should stay closed but never need to lock, including hall closets, laundry rooms, pantries, and interior connecting doors.

Do not confuse passage hardware with dummy trim. Passage hardware includes a latch that engages the strike in the jamb. Dummy hardware does not move and does not hold the door closed. If the door needs to stay shut against a stop, you need a passage latch, a ball catch, a magnetic catch, or another closing method.

Privacy Function: A Simple Interior Lock

Privacy locksets are intended for bedrooms and bathrooms. A button or thumbturn on the interior side locks the exterior lever, while the outside typically has an emergency release hole or slot. This allows access in a genuine emergency without turning an interior privacy lock into a security device.

Privacy hardware is a poor choice for exterior or high-security doors. It is not designed to resist forced entry, and its emergency release is intentional. For a bathroom that needs accessibility accommodations, confirm the desired lock style, lever operation, and applicable requirements before ordering.

Keyed Entry and Deadbolts: Separate Roles Matter

A keyed entry knob or lever locks the handle itself. It can be appropriate for a side entry, a garage entry, or a light-duty secured office, but many exterior residential doors perform better with a separate deadbolt above a passage lever or handleset. The deadbolt provides the primary security function; the lower trim provides convenient latching and style.

This distinction matters when replacing existing hardware. If your door has two bore holes, measure the center-to-center spacing and determine whether you are replacing a deadbolt plus lever, a connected handleset, or a single keyed lockset. Ordering a beautiful entry lever will not fill a separate deadbolt bore.

Single-cylinder deadbolts use a key outside and a thumbturn inside. They are the familiar residential option. Double-cylinder models require a key on both sides and can reduce the risk of someone reaching through nearby glass to turn the thumbturn. The trade-off is emergency egress: occupants need access to the key to exit. Building codes, fire codes, and local rules may limit where double-cylinder deadbolts are permitted.

Commercial Functions Need More Precision

Commercial lockset terminology is more specific because the consequences of the wrong function are greater. A facility manager may need a door that stays locked automatically, a door that can be secured from the corridor, or a door that allows staff access while maintaining free exit for occupants.

Classroom vs. Storeroom

A classroom function lets a key control the outside lever's locked or unlocked state. The inside lever remains free at all times. This works well where an authorized person needs to lock a room from the corridor while people inside must still leave without delay.

A storeroom function is more restrictive. The outside lever is normally locked and requires a key each time for entry. Closing the door returns it to the locked condition. Office functions are useful when a person inside needs to secure a room temporarily but the room may remain unlocked for most of the day. Operation varies more than buyers expect. Check Fit Before You Choose a Finish

Once you know the function, confirm the door preparation. Most residential tubular locksets fit a standard 2-1/8-inch cross bore, but not every door is standard. Measure the backset from the door edge to the center of the bore. Common backsets are 2-3/8 inches and 2-3/4 inches.

Also check door thickness, particularly on older homes, custom wood doors, metal doors, and doors with applied panels. Many products fit 1-3/8-inch to 1-3/4-inch doors, while thicker doors may require an extension kit or a specific configuration. For levers, identify handing when the product requires it. A reversible lever is forgiving; a handed mortise lock trim is not.

If you are matching existing hardware, document the bore diameter, backset, door thickness, edge prep, and center-to-center spacing before removing anything. For keyed products, decide whether all locks should share one key, whether certain doors need different keys, and whether the new hardware must work with an existing key system.

A clear function choice makes every later decision easier.
