What Keyless Entry Locks Actually Do
Keyless entry locks replace or supplement a traditional mechanical key with an electronic credential. Depending on the model, that credential may be a PIN code entered at a keypad, a fingerprint, a phone app, a proximity card, or a fob. Many residential products still include a physical key cylinder as a backup, while others are designed to operate entirely without a keyway.
For a homeowner, the practical benefit may be giving a dog walker a temporary code instead of copying a house key. For a property manager, it may be changing access between tenants without rekeying every turnover. Confirm what is included, what requires separate equipment, and whether the features you want will work with the property’s network.
Cards and fobs can be a practical middle ground for offices, amenity spaces, and users who prefer not to enter a code. For higher-traffic commercial openings, credential type, reader format, and system compatibility should be specified before purchase. A residential smart lock is not a substitute for a properly selected commercial access-control opening.
Security Is More Than a Keypad
Electronic convenience does not change the fundamentals of door security. For an exterior residential door, a deadbolt with a properly installed reinforced strike plate provides meaningful protection. The strike should be secured into solid framing with appropriately long screws, not only the door jamb trim.
Look at the lock’s grade and intended application. ANSI/BHMA grading helps compare durability and security performance on many residential locksets. A Grade 1 product is designed for the heaviest-duty residential and light commercial use, while Grade 2 is a common choice for quality residential exterior doors. The appropriate grade depends on the opening, traffic, and budget.
A key override is a trade-off worth considering carefully. It provides a familiar backup if batteries fail or electronics malfunction, but it also means the lock has a keyway that may need to be rekeyed to match other doors. A key-free design removes that cylinder but requires confidence in battery backup procedures and alternate entry plans.
Avoid treating auto-locking as a complete security strategy. It helps prevent an accidental unlocked door, but the setting should suit the household. Power, Backup Access, and Everyday Maintenance

Commercial openings require even more care. Fire-rated doors, exit doors, and doors subject to accessibility or life-safety requirements cannot be specified based on appearance alone. The lock function must preserve free egress where required, and the complete opening - including frame, door, closer, exit device, and electrification - must be considered together. For rental properties, decide who owns code administration and what happens at turnover. A lock that supports quick code deletion may save time, but a physical key override still needs a rekeying policy if keys have been issued. The best product is often the one that makes the next change of occupancy simpler, not the one with the longest feature list.
A Better Way to Narrow the Options
Start by identifying the door’s purpose: primary entry, garage entry, rental unit, office, storage room, or shared amenity space. Then document the existing prep and thickness, decide whether you need a deadbolt or lever function, and choose the access method your users will actually adopt.
From there, compare finish, grade, backup method, connectivity, and user-code capacity. If the new lock needs to coordinate with existing hardware, bring the finish family and trim profile into the decision early.
